I am a mental health therapist with AuDHD. In my work with clients, I have seen this over and over again, and I am glad that you have taken the E space to address it. One of my jobs as a therapist who uses humor regularly in session is to model how humor can be used to scaffold struggles instead of undermine them. The struggle is real.

I’m unable to NOT criticize myself for every GD thing. In fact, I have to engage in enough DOING THINGS each day in order to feel I am allowed to keep existing. The days I am unable to DO are the days I struggle to remain alive. It’s definitely not something any therapy can fix…and is a program beaten into me from birth. I do my best to show up amazing for everyone else and to keep going but always am filled with self-hatred. Fun Times.

i’m glad this works for people who need it. not all of us are harmed by self deprecating humor. it depends on whether you use the humor to release the feeling or if it’s just self hate made β€œfunny”.
