I didn't realize this worked for anyone else! I normally listen to bluegrass(ish) music, and it works wonders! I also love listening to hymns while I'm doing very mentally demanding work(Andrew Peterson as well!).
I've been inadvertently using all of this since I was in high school, if I have a well paced instrumental beat on loop in my ears than I can draw for 6 or more hours at a time without distractions.
Unfortunately for me, music also represents a trap: since music either helps me focus or acts as pouring gasoline on the fire of my immagination... if I listen to the wrong type I'll end up locked in a state of daydreaming that will leave me exhausted after just 30 minutes. Usually it's music with lyrics or instrumentals with a pronounced emotional component to them (like the movie trailer kind) that pose this danger to me.
On the other hand it's electronic instrumentals with a decently fast drum beat and a trance-like feel to them that keep me in a state of focus.
Melodic deep house works for me. I work better with music and have a 5 speaker surround sound configuration at my workstation. Used to listen to hip hop but like you said, would start concentration on the music more than the work. YouTube music’s algorithm has been a lifesaver because I just play one track from my existing playlist and the subsequent suggestions are just always 👌🏾.
I could never explain the joy of finding new music but in the context of ADHD, it’s all making sense now.
I recently started using the app Brain.fm, which was marketed to me (diagnosed ADHD). It's worth checking out BUT BEWARE of the hefty cost that comes after the free trial! I totally forgot to cancel (ADHD, remember?!)!
